Broad Street
by ashley scheuer
The pasture at our home in Louisville Kentucky was all puddles. It had been raining for 3 solid days and I knew the sun would peek out of the clouds one of these days. My name is Emily Brook and my whole life I've lived with horses.
As I walked down the dirt road into town I thought of what momma had asked me to but in town. Although Henry Ford had thought up the idea of the automobile, our little town still had horse drawn carriages, but I was afraid that wouldn't last long. That's what I liked about this town, looking at the beautiful white horses.
As I walked into our little town grocery, I heard a voice say, ''Did you hear of the Patterson's getting one of those automobiles? I heard the Pattersons just moved in that big mansion down yonder and they were driving an automobile!!'' As I listened, I grabbed a few items from the shelf. I walked over to the counter, got out $1.00 to pay for the items. The man kept talking as he rang up my items.
''Yeah I reckon their rich! I mean one of those automobiles must be worth a fortune!!'' Said the man.
I kept listening and then asked him, ''Where is this mansion located, Sir?''
He looked at me surprised, and said, ''Why missy I wouldn't be prowlin over there unexpectedly. I've heard they are some mean peoples over there on Broad Street mansion. Ask your mommy first missy! You could get into real trouble!''
''Yeah missy,'' said the other man, ''And Steve, use proper english!
I'm telling you missy you don't want to be in trouble with the Pattersons anyday! They'll capture you for sure! And you want forget it!''
''On Broad Street, eh? Thank you Sir!'' I picked up my items and left the store. I was heading to Broad Street!
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I kept running until I could run no more. I sat down to rest and thought of where Broad Street might be. I saw a helicopter above soaring in the sky like a bird with powerful wings. I thought I should keep looking for the mansion but my momma would be pretty angry if I didn't come home with her groceries.
Actually I wouldn't call her my momma at all. You see my real mom died when I was a child. My father was in the army at the time and I don't even know if he knows she's dead. He resigned from the army and I haven't seen him since.
Anyway I now live at the orpanage in Louisville. The matron at my orphange is cruel to everyone who lives there. But her butler is really kind. The matron decided that I'm the errand runner when we need something from town.
The butler's name is Andy Crocus. He too has taken care of horses all his life and I think enjoyes it. He takes me to the barns every week and teaches me more on how to ride plus I learn how to groom and feed. It's hard work but It's also alot of fun.
Anyway, I have a kind, sweet friend named Madison. Her parents died kinda the same way mine did. She has the job in the kitchen of cooking. She likes it except when the matron says she didn't do the cooking right.
When I got back, there was an automobile in the driveway. I'm so used to seeing a regular horse drawn carriage.
